On behalf of the 4.7 million family caregivers in our State of California, the CRCs thank you for your support!

In FY 2019-20, Governor Newsom, with support from the state legislature, approved an augmentation of $10M per year for three years for the CRCs to increase numbers of family caregivers served; deploy a statewide interactive client record; increase the use of technologies to extend services; and promote quality and standardization of core services.

The ravages of COVID-19 have amplified the needs of family caregivers across the state, particularly in Black and Latino communities, which have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. Research shows that caregiving responsibilities have only increased during the pandemic, and that existing caregivers are experiencing even greater caregiving burdens as the pandemic continues to rage. Moreover, despite the added funding that the CRCs received for fiscal years 2019-21, the added stressors and burdens of caregiving during COVID-19 have led to the establishment of waiting lists for caseworkers at some CRCs.

As California continues to promote home- and community-based services (e.g., through the Master Plan for Aging) the importance and needs of family caregivers will only continue to increase.  Alzheimer’s and other dementias that increase in an aging society require healthy and capable caregivers to provide competent care.  The CRCs are an integral component to the state’s Master Plan on Aging.  To support the increasing demand of family caregivers in the state, the CRCs are asking to continue the $10M per year for an additional 2 years past the original sunset date (to June 2024) and to add $2M per year to build an equity and inclusion corps to increase the level of services to diverse communities across the state by adding bi-lingual, bi-cultural and LGBT staff targeted to regions with high densities of diverse communities.  The request for the CRC budget extension and additional $2M per year is sponsored by the Honorable California Assembly Member Adrin Nazarian of the 46TH District.
